The invitation, from a partnership of Anglicans and Catholics, follows a visit by a Vatican representative to Durham University in March. It was made by Tom Wright, Bishop of Durham, and is supported by Bishop Seamus Cunningham of the Catholic diocese of Hexham and Newcastle.
If accepted, it would be the first Papal visit to north-east England.
Bishop Wright said: "Durham has in recent years become a major global centre for ecumenical work and the close interlinking of cathedral and university means that Durham is well placed to host an event which is simultaneously academic and ecumenically spiritual."
The North East has a rich Christian heritage. Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, in Northumberland was a base for Christian evangelising in the 7th Century.

'shudder'. You show your Durham vintage Jeffrey by calling it Durham University rather than its proper title.
What are you talking about anon, that is the BBC not me.
So, for those of us in the colonies, what do the insiders call 'Durham University'?
Anon,
I wasn't disagreeing with you on anything, just making it clear that this was from the BBC not me.
This would make a great seal of sense as the Pope has expressed respect for +Durham's work and has even invited him to address Catholic bishops at the Vatican on the subject of Biblical hermeneutics.
Jeff, why does your blog attract so many anonymous commentators? Are they afraid to use their own names, whilst merrily criticising you.
Who knows? and perhaps there are some good reasons and the others are possibly a sad result of mere cowardice.
Well Jeff,
This is your fr.in.law, Hank, my question was 'what do 'insiders' call Durham University? No one ever answered. It was not a slight. I tried to leave my name but it didn't publish for some reason. I'm Hank Whitmore. So, what is the answer to my humble question? God bless you all.
Insiders and outsiders call it Durham University.
Yikes.... what a lot of fuss!! I'll unmask myself as the original anonymous!!
Just a gentle jibe as I'm sure Jeffrey is aware untill very recently (the last five year) Durham always correctly styled itslef as the University of Durham, which it still is by charter and law is.
Durham University is a bland marketing excercise (dare I say a Blairite stripping down) by the VC etc to downmarket a high quality University. Look on facebook - there are groups protesting about it.
Funny this was seen as critical - just a gentile tease at another Durham man. You don't think you guys are getting a bit sensitive and taking things too seriously do you!
I took it as a general comment to about the last five posts. I wasn't thinking about this one as it has nothing controversial in it.
I wasn't certain about the question...or why it was being asked based upon the article but I'm slow..
:-)
Curious -- what is it about "University of Durham" that somehow automatically renders it more prestigious than calling it simply "Durham University"?
It's just that both terms seem synonymous.
"Durham University" or "University of Durham" ?? Does it really matter??!! There are more important things in heaven and earth......
